Background

The growing number of cars also means an increase of parking lots. This is often at the cost of free public areas. Volkswagen wanted to find a smart way to give back the city. So why not transform parking spaces into hybrid spaces where cars and people co-habit?

Description

By creating Volksparking, Volkswagen showed that they are looking for future-oriented solutions. A way to make the city more liveable again.

A mobile basketball hoop detects unused parking spaces and turns them into a playgrounds.

Execution

The hoop makes use of customized software and took 8 months to produce. Installed at a parking lot in Belgium, the installation allowed local residents to use the free spaces as a play area.
