Description
In defiance of his travel bans, we took President Trump’s iconic “Make America Great Again” hat and translated it into Arabic. We turned a symbol of intolerance and exclusion into a symbol of inclusion to illustrate the point that Muslim Americans also make this country great. Because what makes America great isn't just some of us. It's all of us.
Execution
The goal is to raise as much money as possible for the ACLU. We launched our Kickstarter campaign on January 22, 2017, just days before Trump signed the first executive order for the Muslim ban. We reached out to various social movement organizers as well as local retail boutiques. Congruently, we launched a social media campaign utilizing Facebook to micro-target specific groups with our ad placements. Between this and simple word of mouth, momentum quickly picked up and allowed us to surpass our Kickstarter funding goal in less than a month.
Outcome
Our social media buy generated over 12,000 Facebook views in less than a week, and spurred a strong CTR (over 18%). The hat was also featured in two movement marches in Southern California thanks to social engagement.
Our Kickstarter campaign was funded in three weeks, resulting in over-funding by the close of the campaign. The implementation of our site, https://www.wearegreathat.com/, has continued to bring in hat sales to further provide donations to the ACLU.
