Description

We Were Soldiers, directed by Randall Wallace and starring Mel Gibson, was marketed to adults who enjoy thrilling and touching drama. The film takes place during the first battle between US military and North Vietnamese forces in 1965, but its story focuses on the soldiers and the families who waited for their return. The overall marketing targeted towards adult men and women, not just men interested in war movies. The website promotes the film as an entertaining epic while displaying content highlighting both the soldiers and wives. The website gives audiences historical insight not only into the battle, but also the lives of the men and women portrayed by the actors. Creative Flash-animated transitions transport users to each section by mimicking the pull up and landing of helicopter movement. The website consists of nine sections laid out in the navigation as grids. In the site, users can click on any grid to move to that section. Each section addresses the story's facets from the helicopters in battle to the reporter who recorded the event with his camera to the home front. Mel Gibson's character holds it all together in the center thematically as reflected in the navigational layout.
