Description

First Period. You’re Not Alone.

Whisper brings rural Chinese girls their very first introduction to puberty with live tutorials, gift boxes, first period protection and educational pamphlets – turning a moment that is anxiety inducing and shameful into one that instead makes them feel proud and confident about their femininity.

Execution

We began with a heart-wrenching online film to expose the situation these girls face when experiencing their first period alone, and a powerful call-to-action rallying mothers across China to join our effort.

They joined by raising awareness of the program, volunteering to teach first puberty education classes, or by purchasing limited edition packs of Whisper with proceeds benefiting our initiative.

We packaged the educational materials and product in a kit specifically designed to look like a gift so that the girls could disassociate their first period with ‘taboo’ and instead see it as a ‘celebratory’ entrance into womanhood. To that end, we sent the kits and educational materials to the schools in a truck outfitted as a giant, pink gift-box to stir excitement that something very special from Whisper had arrived.

The classes were taught by Whisper trained volunteers, with interactive materials making the classes both informative and fun.

Outcome

The Impact of Whisper’s First Period Education Program:

• Nearly 600 “first period” classes taught by hundreds of female volunteers

• 2 million sanitary pads donated

• 500 million online engagements (shares, reposts, comments, likes)

• 157 powerful news media mentions from influential media such as TenCent News (China’s #1 online news site)

• 9 Billion earned media impressions

• $2.3 USD million raised for the program through the sale of Whisper limited edition packs

• 100,000 girls helped this year, with a commitment to help 100,000 more on an ongoing, annual basis.
