BriefExplanation
Develop an additional type of unit to the existing city hall project of Curitiba called The City Reads which would be installed in bus stations. This additional unit should be a simple, low-budget, robust, but easy to construct structure that keeps and holds books and equipment for everyday book lending to all bus passengers.
ClientBriefOrObjective
Create a multifunctional space in harmony with the urban flow, disassociated from the bus terminals, that could be easily constructed and transported, and also hold up to 1500 books, computer, clerk desk. The individual unit should also be easy to set-up during the day and closed at night to protect all equipment. Aside from technical aspects, the Reading Station`s design should inspire culture and instigate people to read more often.
Effectiveness
The system works. More than 1200 books a month circulate at each Reading Station. People are really reading, and clearly using the system. Literature is desired, when it is easy to get. The system will be extended to other cities, such as São Paulo, subway stations, proving it to be an effective way to incentive the habit of reading.
Execution
Material research, small space evaluation and prototyping were key to this development. The idea was to create a cocoon type unit that would be self-contained, and would open up to create an area were books could be accessible, the same way they would in a bookstore or library, but at night bookcase doors could easily by moved to close up the station and be locked with a single key.
