BriefExplanation
Honda 'Dream Makers' is a rollercoaster ride through the creative process and techniques involved in bringing dreams to life. It showcases the incredible craft and innovation that goes into filmmaking. Each scene features four characters and four Honda models.
Conceived as a sketch, realised as a final image and everything in-between; the distinct genres are meticulously crafted at a rapid pace taking us through the various stages – from scripting to storyboards, through CGI to grading – ending in the perfectly crafted visual.
Each sequence follows a simple narrative with a setup and pay off. The process represents an analogy of the passion and relentless pursuit of excellence behind both great films and Honda vehicles.
EntrySummary
The main objective was to create four sponsorship idents for Honda featuring a range of their products and therefore targeting a wide market. These run alongside all films shown on Channel 4, More4, Film4 and E4. The idents work as a 15’ opener, 5’ break bumpers and a 20’ closing sequence to the film. In addition to this a 90’ online film and cinema ad was created. The set replaced an older Honda sponsorship campaign and premiered in July 2017 continuing through 2018.
Translation
Dream Makers is a celebration of Visual Effects. The idea sets out to tell a simple story from its conception as words sketched on paper to a finished shot realised on screen. Visual Effects is one of the many featured disciplines but it is also at the heart of bringing the whole concept to life.
A 3D pre-vis was created for the story to define the location, camera and action for each sequence. This had to work for 5’, 10’, 15’ and a combined 90’ version. These initial CG animatics formed the foundation from which all of the other parts were reverse engineered. In essence the whole job was realised in 3D and then the specific parts were shot, drawn or animated to illustrate the different parts of the process.
Visual effects thinking is often employed at the planning stage and Dream Makers is testament to this way of working.
