CampaignDescription

Whalar enables scaled collaborations between brands and creators with influence. This can crudely be broken down into three components:

- Part search/dating; our AI lead algorithm that discovers and matches influencers to a brief from dozens of data points.

- Part marketplace; our platform that enables the transaction between brands and influencers.

- Part workflow; our toolset that makes multimarket scaled collaborations manageable.

Collaborating with this community enables brands to adopt a nimbler creative operating model, with greater inclusion of diverse creative voices and delivering the scale of work needed for today’s evermore personalized and fast-moving world of marketing. The fact that it’s fast and very cost effective is the icing on the cake.

A Whale call can travel 10,000 miles under the ocean and be heard by other Whales. Thanks to Whalar, brands can now collaborate with influencers to create messages that will be heard just as far away!

Execution

Our technology stack consists of:

Discovery crawler – our solution to discover this new global creative community.

Influence analyzer – our solution to apply weighted analysis and ascertain who are the real creators with influence.

Matchmaking algorithm - our solution to take dozens of data points from a client brief, including audience demographics, desired creative output and brand aesthetic to shortlist the right creators with influence for each campaign.

Pricing algorithm – our solution which provides a suggested pricing range for each influencer collaboration based on the specifics of that collaboration and historical data of all collaborations.

Transactional toolset – our solution that powers the payment flow, contracting, rights management and invoicing requirements to ensure straightforward procurement.

Workflow toolset – our solution (desktop/mobile platform/app) that powers the briefing, messaging, work submission and analysis that makes a single campaign involving 100’s of influencers in global markets possible and easily manageable with the delivery of consistency.

Impact measurement – our solution that analyzes the influencer impact of the marketing if and when and influencer has shared content with their audience.

Machine learning & data analysis – our overarching analysis that takes all data to apply past learnings for iterative future performance improvements.

Outcome

In just 2 years our platform has made more than $8m of collaborations possible. Enabling creators, from all walks of life, to do what they love, brands to produce content they’re proud of, and the audience to engage with content and discover brands that are truly relevant to them.

We've become the Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat official partner for influencers, have advertising legend Sir John Hegarty as Chairman, have funding from more than 30 industry veterans and work with 100’s of brands including the likes of Unilever, Diageo, Estee Lauder, Nike, Apple, Unicef, Ralph Lauren and LVMH.

We’re on track for 4x – 5x growth this year and we hope for our technology to be a catalyst for transformation of the industry with Whalar being the embedded solution that makes it possible…we’re on a mission to Liberate the Creative Voice.

Relevancy

We're focused on leveraging technology to provide a new operating model for producing high quality creative work, accessing engaged audiences and gaining diverse consumer insights.

This is done globally, with a new pipeline of creative talent, with full transparency on every cent, in a fraction of the time it’s traditionally taken and at a fraction of the cost.

In just 2 years we’ve planted a seed of marketing transformation at over 200 of the world’s leading brands, several of whom are now looking to internalise the innovation and embed our operating model with a solution called Whalar Within.

Solution

- October 2015 – Whalar is incorporated.

- February 2016 – MVP version of Whalar launched

- May 2016 – £500k seed funding round completed

- June 2016 – Whalar participates at Lions Innovation with beta product

- July 2016 – May 2017 – Whalar platform continually innovated, tested and tweaked to create truly scalable product.

- May 2017 – Sept 2017 – Whalar participates in R/GA & Snap Accelerator as well as R/GA Academy at Cannes Lions.

- July 2017 – Whalar New York office launched.

- September 2017 – Whalar Studio & Campus released to create scaled learning and community building environment for influencers.

- October 2017 – Whalar AI algorithm released to enable data lead matchmaking.

- December 2017 - £2.6m funding round completed with c.30 industry veterans

- January 2018 – Whalar Board appointed; Chloe Gottlieb, John Hegarty, Rob Horler, Andrea Wong

- January 2018 – Whalar Los Angeles office launched.

- February 2018 – Whalar app for influencers released to enable seamless influencer interaction.

- March 2018 – Whalar AI v2 released & Whalar Within platform released.

- April 2018 – Whalar Stars beta released, a tech lead influence talent management/representation solution.

Synopsis

Our founders didn’t come from the communication industry. They’d never heard of WPP, Omnicom, IPG, Publicis, Dentsu…

Whalar was born out of entrepreneurial experience with their direct to consumer watch brand, Shore Projects. They had incredible success with this brand, winning the Shopify Build a Business competition in 2015, meaning they were the top selling fashion & apparel brand worldwide on Shopify that year - https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/248363

This success came from their understanding that audiences want to engage with brands on social, on their mobile devices and love brands who share valuable content, build communities and don’t solely push ads at them.

As a bootstrapped start-up, influencer marketing enabled Shore Projects to connect with global audiences; by creating mobile first content at speed, from people living and breathing culture. Whalar was subsequently developed to bring a technology solution that enabled the scaling of this approach to influencer marketing.
