OVERVIEW

Background

This is an advertisement for the Satsuki Sho Award, the highest-ranking G1 race, organized by the JRA (Japan Racing Association), which is in charge of holding horse races in Japan. The number of visitors and bettors have been declining and the fanbase is aging. They are aiming to acquire new customers, including young and inexperienced people who are unfamiliar with horse racing, to maintain a solid base of regular customers.

Describe the creative idea

Using a pop-culture design with a cover motif featuring a Japanese manga magazine aimed towards a younger audience, it tries to appeal to people who have not been interested in horse racing.(Manga culture is flourishing in Japan, and as of January 2021, there are nearly 400 types of manga magazines being published.)In addition, the "Satsuki Sho Award" is considered to be one of the most famous races that determines the top horse from among the young 3-year-old horses.

Describe the execution

By using expressions seen in manga, the youthfulness and dynamic feelings that are the characteristics of the race could be produced more effectively.

List the results

By targeting younger people, at the time of the Satsuki Award race (held on April 19, 2020), it recorded the highest betting ticket sales among the six Grade 1 races that were held at that time. Sales of betting tickets exceeded 15billion yen even though the race was held with no spectators on the day due to the influence of COVID-19.
