Uniform Number 81 – this is nothing but the manifestation of Daisuke Miura’s resolution to take on a new challenge as the manager. Receiving a formal offer to become the manager of the first team, he looked straight ahead and said, “Yes”. This is the moment when YOKOHAMA DeNA BAYSTARS Manager Daisuke Miura was born. After finishing his 25-year playing career only for YOKOHAMA BAYSTARS, Miura assumed the position of its special advisor. He gained knowledge in wider fields including a visit to Major League Baseball. After serving as a pitching coach for the first team, he, as the farm team manager, completed for the championship of Eastern League until near the end of this season. The next year will mark the 30th anniversary since he came to Yokohama. He has spent more than half of his life in this city. There have been fans who believe in him anytime, helping Daisuke Miura grow up. He knows he can’t achieve anything alone. “This is why I want you all to help us. I will think about what I can do for that and how I should do to help players demonstrate their best performance and play games under the best atmosphere,” Miura says. He best knows there are ups and downs. “But, I still want to achieve only one goal,” he says firmly. Miura continues, “We will win that championship again here in Yokohama. I don’t want to give or deliver happiness to them. I want to win it together. I don’t want to move them. I want to be moved together with them.” Not pursuing what a manger should be, but being himself based on his principles. Once accepting the offer, he will go straight ahead with determination. Miura came back to this place with his love for YOKOHAMA in his mind. On his retirement day, Miura promised, “One day, I will??”, which is now. Uniform Number 81 – Manager Miura. He will win the championship by beating other strong teams as expected for YOKOHAMA.

What he has been having is a pride of YOKOHAMA number.

Uniform Number 18 – Pitcher Miura.

Uniform Number 18. This number exactly describes how Daisuke Miura has spent his life. As the 6th draft pick in 1991, he joined YOKOHAMA TAIYO WHALES. His uniform number was 46 then. Several years later, Miura made a direct request to change his uniform number with a strong hope that he would make 18 the ace number of YOKOHAMA, but failed. Encouraged by the words of “You should show results first”, Miura continued to throw his arm and got that number on his own in the off-season of 1997 in which he achieved double-digit victories. In 1998 when Miura played games with wearing 18, his long-sought number, on his back, he obtained his career-high 12 victories and YOKOHAMA BAYSTARS won the league championship and the title of Japan Series for the first time in 38 years. A joy strong enough to make him shaking which welled up from the bottom of his heart. “I want to enjoy such a rewarding, unforgettable moment again together,” Miura thought. He gained a new motivation and made efforts for more victories, but failed and suffered, keeping struggling with days he couldn’t do anything about. Free Agent (FA) Declaration that Miura decided to make after considering most in his life. He chose to stay eventually because his fans gave him a supportive push. The voices of those in this city who are ready to compete together anytime touched his heart. “To stay with YOKOHAMA and continue to wear 18. Once determining so, I would never let anyone see me looking down even when my being down actually,” Miura pledged to himself. Such a man is now putting his loving YOKOHAMA number behind. It is what a man pitching the ball from the mound should wear in his back. “I want one to pursue and grab it by himself like myself on that day. I want a player to appear who can bear the heavy responsibility of wearing 18,” said Miura. A new manager wearing the uniform number of 81, who is looking ahead to the future of his team. Uniform Number 18 – Pitcher Miura. With that pride in his mind, he will never quit and keep competing.
