BriefExplanation
Members of Congress were invited to a restaurant’s opening night with no idea what was really in store. Inside, they discovered the establishment was run entirely by people with Down syndrome. The staff delivered the perfect evening and proved how capable people with Down syndrome are, or at least how capable they could be if there were no outdated laws standing in the way of them working. Every detail of the dinner became part of the message. The night ended with a message “The bill is on us, changing the law is on you.” Then it was up to the lawmakers.
EntrySummary
The Down syndrome community is one of the most discriminated against groups in the us. By law, a person with down syndrome can’t work a full-time job, without the risk of losing their healthcare. Without the right to proper employment, it puts the dream of independence out of reach. To change the law, we first had to reach one of the most elusive targets there is - Congress - and change their perceptions of how capable people with Down syndrome really are.
