BriefExplanation
Our film focuses on an unlikely duo - multi-Platinum-selling Irish musician Ronan Keating and young New Zealand actor Julian Dennison. Two people that capture the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. They're in a recording studio, trying to record the iconic Christmas carol Winter Wonderland. Problem is, none of the winter-themed lyrics make sense to Julian, who's used to celebrating Christmas in summer. He doesn't think glistening snow, building snowmen and migrating bluebirds capture the magic of a summer Christmas. So, line by line, he gets Ronan to change the song - to disastrous effect.
Finally, Ronan has enough and storms out of the studio and into the summer day outside. Under the sun and blue skies, he realises Julian may have a point. So together, with an acoustic guitar, the two come together to make a song that they both love. One that captures the magic of a Summer Wonderland.
EntrySummary
Context:
Around the world, Christmas has always been a Northern Hemisphere-dominated event, synonymous with frosty snowmen and frightful weather. Problem is, for New Zealand and many other Southern Hemisphere countries, those things don’t represent Christmas at all. Down here, Christmas is in the middle of summer, not winter. We go to the beach, rather than huddle around roaring fireplaces. We put on sunblock, rather than woolen jumpers. But our warm and sunny festive identity is never represented.
Cultural references:
Kiwi - slang for New Zealander.
Jandals - the New Zealand word for summer shoes.
Pohutukawa - iconic New Zealand summer flower.
Prickles - thorny summer weed that is commonly stepped on.
Ice Blocks - frozen flavoured popsicle.
Sun Screen - Sun block/Sun protector.
Tahi, rua, toru, wha – Maori for ‘one, two, three, four’.
