Overview

Why is this work relevant for Creative Data?

"BIOHACKERS" is a Netflix Original Series about biotechnology and genetic engineering. To promote it we turned the series itself into a biotechnological experiment. We took its binary data, converted it into genetic code and stored it in artificial DNA. Thus we created: The World's First Netflix Series stored in DNA.

Background

Situation:

In August 2020, "BIOHACKERS" started on Netflix, a series about biotechnology and genetic engineering. Much of it sounds like science fiction, but it is already reality today.

Brief and objectives:

Announce the new series in a completely new way and spark a discussion about the possibilities and dangers of genetic engineering.

Describe the creative idea / data solution

Much of what is shown in "Biohackers" sounds like science fiction. But it is already reality today. To prove it, we created: the genetic code of the series.

We turned 42 minutes of Netflix series into 400 million DNA sequences. The DNA then was encapsulated in nanometre-sized glass beads, which make it possible to preserve the series for thousands of years and to read it out again at any time.

"Biohackers" is the World's First Netflix Series stored in DNA.

Describe the data driven strategy

We took the binary data of the complete first episode of "Biohackers". We "translated" the binary data into genetic code and stored it in artificial DNA.

This "DNA of the Series" was then sent to influencers, science and tech bloggers, fans and journalists. At the same time, we published the complete DNA code on the web and provided an open source software with which anyone could decode the first episode before the official launch.
