Description

Although the vehicle is not available yet, Porsche wants to give its clients and fans the possibility to experience the Mission E in a memorable and unique way.

We decided to go with a multilevel concept by creating an event application first. The application was tailored to the respective purpose of giving the user an understanding of topics such as Electric Drive or Inductive Charging in a playful way.

In the second stage this concept was evolved in a public app that allows users to take the Mission E home and place it in e.g. the garage, change the size and color and start an interactive driving experience.

In terms of design the aim was to link the application closely to the vehicle itself, continuing the Mission E’s design elements and reusing them where applicable. The main menu as example is a direct reference to the vehicle’s speedometer.

Execution

Since the application’s core functionalities are built on new technologies that have not reached a high level of market penetration (yet) - and in case of ARCore the Mission E application was presented first only a few days after the SDK release – the project execution started with a broad research phase.

To deal with the fact that there was no real car available to test the application, a virtual reality mockup of the Mission E in a showroom environment was created to test the application’s spatial behavior in the context of the vehicle.

Research started in the beginning of August 2017, the actual implementation started in the end of October 2017 with the first presentation on the Porsche Tracks Event in Madrid on 15th of December. Based on the feedback collected the public application was developed and went live 09.03.2018 in the Google Playstore and 16.03.2018 on Apple iTunes.

Outcome

Although the event application was planned for a single use it created a positive resonance leading to several requests from different markets/ countries to reuse it. Thus, the app has been presented e.g. on the Candian Motorshow 2018 or the NOAH Conference in Tel Aviv and will be in use through 2018.

Also the public application has gained some attention since its first presentation on the mobile world congress in Barcelona. There were reports on several news websites (e.g. https://vrodo.de/augmented-reality-porsche-zeigt-e-auto-mit-hilfe-von-arkit-und-arcore/ https://www.engadget.com/2018/02/23/google-launches-arcore-1-0/ ) as well as being featured in YouTube videos and on Social networks such as twitter or Instagram by the users. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Yxwtrzs8mg, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV0t3bcPSs0 )

The ARCore application was chosen as one of three Apps to be shown live at the Huawei P20 launch event on March 27th to advertise the technology, but also gave Porsche another platform to promote the Mission E. The presentation can be reviewed here: https://youtu.be/dGUkQPTkXhQ?t=1h41m16s.
