Background

For Album Cover, the brief was to write a film that communicated the new Portrait feature on iPhone 15 that lets you turn your photos into portraits after you take the shot. And for even more control, you can shift the focus between subjects.

Execution

We set out to create a convincingly real world for this indie band to inhabit so that there was buy-in when they each begin passive aggressively punishing one another. All the directorial choices were in the service of underscoring the character’s power dynamics. She’s the alpha - creatively and interpersonally. So we ever so subtly bathed her in more light, and gave her flashier clothing (both on the cover and in the studio). Perhaps the trickiest part, though, was finding a rhythm where what was happening between the lines was as important as what any given character said. Single scenes are deceptively tricky to pull off in advertising, where the moments of behavior need to be compressed, but still feel like they have life to them and require deft and nuanced direction.
