Background
President Trump’s policies are global news, and human rights violations are global concerns. When news broke of human rights abuses at the U.S Mexico border it was a story that Amnesty International knew the world should be aware of. We highlighted this by creating a radio ad featuring the anguish cries of migrant children being held in detention centres – responding within 24 hours to this unfolding event and harnessing the discovery of this secretly obtained audio footage.
Execution
In summer 2018 reports begin to surface that the United States has been forcibly separating migrant children from their parents at the U.S Mexico border.
On June 18th 2018 secretly recorded audio of distraught children is obtained from inside a child detention centre.
Within 24 hours Amnesty International acts, working with a composer to adapt and record a new version of one of the most iconic national anthems in the world – reimagining the ‘Land of the Free’ to highlight how America has lost its way, and incorporating the same anguished cries of these migrant children into the composition.
Because whenever human rights are being silenced, Amnesty International will always be the first to speak up.
