Description
Team Penske Racing has had only one goal: To drive faster than anyone on the planet.
And for the last 50 years, they've been relentless in this pursuit of speed.
We set out to visually capture this pursuit in a non-traditional format by making the experience a more interactive and physical one.
Hence the idea of creating a book that commemorates five decades of the pursuit of speed by equipping it with a fully functioning speedometer.
So whether you're passing it to someone, walking with it, running with it, or driving in a car (passenger side, of course), this special book full of stories of racing victories and record speeds would always be measuring how fast you're going.
Execution
- cover was designed with intent to feel like the hood of the Pennzoil/Penske Yellow Submarine Indy 500 racing car.
- the drilled hole through book is a constant reminder that speed is at the core of the theme (literally and figuratively)
- large format designed to feel immersive
- we elected to treat introductory and caption typography very minimalistically to feel streamlined and to create contrast/drama against the photographic moments
- Black Suedelux flocked paper as bookends gives material contrast to the hard surface of the book exterior to feel like you’ve entered into another space (like a vehicle)
- the edge of the book has been gilded in metallic gold leaf to allude to the 50th anniversary of Penske.
- simple format of featuring one moment to represent each of the 50 years allowed us to focus on a variety of aspects of Penske
Outcome
The book truly exemplified what Pennzoil has meant to Team Penske and their consistent success in the auto racing industry. It's a book that will further enhance Pennzoil's claim as the top manufacturer and developer of engine oil.
This book will be featured at the the Team Penske Racing museum and possibly the Motorsports and International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
