Execution

To create “Getaway,” we partnered with Animal Logic, which did the animation for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. This was helpful because we could work within the same LEGO world as in the movie, much of which was pre-built.

To adhere to strict brand standards, we could only use existing LEGO blocks. They had to obey the laws of physics and their integrity had to be preserved. This presented a challenge when making a scaled-down version of the Silverado. LEGO master builders worked with the Silverado CAD file and scanned real LEGO pieces — scratches, fingerprints and all — to build the truck. Texture mapping and lighting techniques were applied. Set up to look like stop-motion, 3-D pieces were manipulated frame-by-frame to create the animation.

It took several tries to make it all look realistic. A lengthy process, to spectacular effect.
