Description
Mothers agency Chrismas Card for 2003 was a hidden camera recreation of the nativity story, updated by 2003 years. As in the original nativity, we join two unwelcome travellers in an unforgiving land. The man is trying, pleading to find a room for the night for his heavily pregnant wife. Deja vu - they are refused entry wherever they try, there is no room at the inn. However, this couple are actors playing newly arrived Eastern European immigrants in Britain. Despite the fact that she is wearing a maternity gown, and her waters break on the pull of a cord, the contiunal rejection of 'Josef and Mari' from some of London's swankiest hotels and celebrity hangouts, as well as the unbelievably xenophobic rejection from a typical Leicester Square club serve as a timely reminder of how little has changed at christmas in 200 years. The events were filmed in one evening, through a combination of long lens and hidden cameras, and then sent out as a website (www.josefandmari.com) and as viral films to all of Mother's friends and clients.
