Description
The Luminale in Frankfurt is a biennial event for lighting culture. For the opening of the Luminale 2010, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Frankfurt commissioned a light sculpture that makes the economic and cultural power of the metropolis on the river Main visible and tangible.
Execution
The most important means of communication was the artwork itself. We used it intensively in the preliminary stages in order to continually present it in a project blog – updated daily – from the production to the end of the Luminale. The installation is fed and controlled by information from central online data streams: urban traffic and air traffic at Frankfurt international airport, development of stock market prices and the number of accesses to Europe’s largest internet node or conversations on the topic of “Frankfurt” on social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.
Outcome
Every evening, Luminale visitors experience the day in a time-compressed version of events thanks to the light installation – and from completely new, unseen perspectives. Combined with the music composed by Robert Heel, the installation is a truly impressive, multi-sensory experience. As the opening installation, the artwork received a particularly large media echo right from the start. Furthermore, we held our exclusive vernissage in the renowned Voges Gallery and hosted parties during the week of the Luminale. Last but not least, the great public response from international visitors ensured that the “Pulse of the City” was the talk of the town.
