Description
We created the first collaborative digital dictionary where people from different genders gained voice and created entries of their own identities to be modified or included in the official Portuguese Dictionary. At the end, we invited a lexicographer to create entries that would truly represent these people.
Execution
First, in order to raise awareness to the project and invite people to participate, we launched the platform to the main press vehicles. By entering the website, the users could find mini documentaries with the testimony of people with many different genders. And the main thing: people could contribute with interpretations of their own gender identities, after all, only those who feel are the ones who can define. With that, we received thousands of interpretations, which were also shared by all the participants in their social networks, boosting our reach. After that, a lexicographer created entries that truly represented those people by their own collaborative interpretations. Finally, they could gain visibility with their entries being uptaded/included in the oficial portuguese language dictionary.
Outcome
In order to make the brazillian portuguese language more inclusive and equalitary in the matters of gender representativity, new entries with new gender interpretations were created.
Right at the start of the project, with the social media activations, we had a potencial reach of over 12 million people, which correponds to over 10% of the brazillian population active on the internet. For a subject that is so little debated outside the groups of interest, reaching millions of people alone is already game changing
We also counted with the collaboration of the main gender diversity and equity groups in the country, and with that, we took the discussions to the public in a didactic way, setting the problem wide open, helping to break this communication barrier and breaking gender prejudice.
