Description

We open as the camera rotates slowly around and then below a billowing column of blues. The music swells and the frame spins, speeding through a horizontal canyon of blues above and churning clouds of pink below. As supers read “Be Floored by Your Walls,” we pass through an advancing mass of purple and orange, finally emerging in a world of deep greens swirling around the Emerald can itself.

Execution

Inspired by classic sci-fi camera moves from "2001: A Space Odyssey" to the trench run in "Star Wars" the team at Psyop created a seamless camera move through seemingly monolithic organic environments. The main tools used were a high-speed arm married to a Phantom Flex4K. Using 400-gallon water tanks, we injected paint into the water and moved the camera with precise choreography at 400–800 fps. We later stitched the pieces together in post, creating an uninterrupted journey through the surreal environment.

The two-day shoot stretched from 8-14 hour days learning through trial and error which executions worked best. Each tank could only withstand a certain amount of paint in the water before vision became impaired and the tanks would have to be drained. Resetting these tanks took around 45 minutes.

One more successful explorations involved a solution of saline and fresh water. The saline would settle at the bottom of the tank while the fresh water remained on top, creating an invisible barrier that the paint would react with and against.

The majority of the footage is practical and CG was used sparingly, mostly to iron out transitions between takes and layer plates upon one another.
