Idea

Expedia extends some of the world's most famous artworks into an immersive 360° experience.

Artists like van Gogh, Monet or Kandinsky were travel-influencers of their era. But their paintings could only show a fraction of reality. Expedia enlarges the view beyond the frame.

Famous artworks were extended in the specific style of every painter – for a digital panoramic view. Within the experience the user can switch seamlessly into a recent 360° photography – to see how the real places look today.

Execution

First, we identified the exact location of the sceneries of world-famous paintings. But where the artists only showed an snippet of what they saw, we expand the painting in the original style of the respective artist – to a digital 360° all-round view of the locations. So we show the places exactly as the artists saw them at the time.

Furthermore, we took a current 360° photo from exactly the same location which enables the user to seamlessly switch between the world of the painting and today’s reality of the locations shown.

Expedia connects the experience with more detailed information about the painter, the artwork and the exact location. And, of course, Expedia offers the opportunity to book a real trip to each of these picturesque destinations.
