We wanted to make a film that could be a reminder of the human goodness in all of us. Showing how small gestures of love or empathy can make all the difference.
The aim was to create a film with emotional depth and realism that takes us close to the characters. They’re from the real world and are not perfect, any more than we are. The old man’s loneliness and grumpiness, and the setting in a very normal terraced house and back garden makes the film more believable and moving as a result.
So the spot didn’t come across as too saccharine, we were careful that the gesture at the end was small but felt big, and so played everything else small, natural and effortless too.
The spot might be redemptive, celebratory and positive, but it is based on a beautifully observed sense of real British life.
