OVERVIEW

Background

"Flowers" takes place in Los Angeles, which was intentional for the theme and direction of this video. The objective was to feature just the artist in various sequences throughout a classically "LA" home. The video opens with Miley crossing a narrow bridge and ascending a long driveway in unusually glamorous wardrobe to make her look almost out-of-place. We quickly see this tie into the next sequence of the artist overtaking the home as if she owns the place and acting out of her own joyous nature. She works out, enjoys the pool, raids the closet, with everything culminating to a scene on the home's rooftop flooded with helicopter search lights as if she's been caught. Again this video features no other cast as besides Miley, as an intentional portrayal of the song about her self-empowerment.

Idea

"Flowers" is a fun and constant reminder of independence throughout. It features the artist, Miley Cyrus and only her for the duration of the video in various sequences that showcase her style and intentions with this piece of music. The creative approach to the video is to showcase the artist as confident and unbothered to the world around her, as she makes herself at home in what is clearly someone else's property.

Ideas to try and portray the lyrical ideas included the flashy dress in the opening scene, to utilizing the homeowner's exercise equipment and pool, then to raiding the closet, tossing and discarding luxuries on the floor. While all this is occurring the artist maintains her confident and joyous demeanor, which were key to the creative and directional theme of the video.

Strategy

As this music video was released the same day as the single across streaming platforms, it's delivery was intended to surprise and leave the audience enthusiastic for the upcoming album. From the a filmmakers perspective, Director Jacob Bixenman's decisions in this film attribute to the Artist's style and influence. Decisions including wardrobe, location, cast (or lack thereof), choreography and cinematography were all based on what the artist was trying to portray with this music. Taking into account previous music videos from this artist, the audience could expect bold fashion choices and fierce energy from Miley going into "Flowers". All of which are expressed in the video in addition to the messages of independence and empowerment that this song thematically depicts.

Outcome

The initial premier of "Flowers" saw an almost instant viral response. Currently the music video has been viewed over 420 million times on Youtube, and Spotify announced the song "holds the record for the most-streamed song in a single week" quickly surpassing one billion streams. The achievement of having the song reach so many people initially only amplified the response to the video that the song's release was paired with. The music video continues to grow and expand it's audience.
