Background

The objective of the video was to create anticipation for the release of Tyler, the Creator's Estate Sale. In the current musical landscape, visuals are important in the marketing of an album. Many songs become known because of TikTok and other forms of social media. Tyler creates hyper specific worlds through his visuals and all of his videos are normally very specific to his albums. This video is bigger than that because it references all his previous personas and shows him breaking from that.

Idea

The video's creative objective was to show the history and passing of time in Tyler's career. Through this video he is closing the chapter on what he knew of himself. The video's is showing Tyler apologizing to all of the previous versions of himself and all the people he has hurt in his life. The end of the video shows Tyler beating up the version of himself wearing his Call Me If You Get Lost album. This song is off the Estate Sale album, which is a collection of songs that didn't make it on the Call Me If You Get Lost album. By beating up this previous version of himself it shows that he is moving on as a musician and is ready to change his image. This creates excitement for what he has coming out next.

Strategy

The audience for this video are people who are either fans of Tyler, the Creator or are interested in his music. People who are familiar with his music will recognize Tyler's different personas and appreciate the references to his history.

Outcome

The music video garnered 21,841,846 views on YouTube, won Bronze at the CLIO Music awards, and was a finalist in the Production Design category at the Ciclope Awards. The Estate Sale debuted at number 3 on the Billboard top 200 chart. Because it was a deluxe edition of his previous album Call Me If You Get Lost, it also created renewed interest in his previous album. Songs on this deluxe version have hundreds of millions of listens on Spotify. This deluxe release was written up in the top music publications in the world including Billboard and Variety.
