Overview

Description

Given the growing soccer rivalry between Costa Rica and Panama, Gatorade decided to create the ultimate challenge between neighbouring countries. A tournament in the maritime border, an unexplored terrain for both of them so none could have an advantage over the other.

Gatorade created "BAM: Batalla en Altamar (Battle on High Seas)", a tournament that starts on the streets and the final round is played on a specially designed ship stadium on the sea border between the 2 countries.

Execution

Professional players from Costa Rica & Panama recruited 16 teams per country. For each team we designed a name, a shield and a uniform, they all looked like real professionals. And because we reinvented the sport we also generated our own rules.

Videos presenting the idea and the players who will play the tournament were published on the brand's social networks. The campaign immediately went viral and captured the attention of the people and “TD Más”, the most important sports media in the region, who gave live coverage to the entire tournament.

A qualifying stage in each country defined the 8 teams that had the possibility of playing at the maritime border on the BAM´s ship stadium, a specially designed and constructed ship stadium for the event.

Outcome

Gatorade Battle on High Seas reinvented soccer and redefined the sporting rivalry between two neighboring countries. The innovation of the idea captured the attention of the people and mainstream media:
