OVERVIEW

Background

To distill the complexities of Precision Child Health, we needed our storytelling approach to feel personal, so we followed a single patient throughout his life to garner an emotional connection from the audience. The story was inspired by Nathan, a real SickKids patient who tragically passed away from a heart condition, which highlights the realities SickKids faces. Though SickKids knew about his condition, it didn’t yet have the tools or technology to understand that he was at high risk for sudden cardiac death. In the film, we showcased how stories like Nathan's could have a vastly different outcome with Precision Child Health.

Execution

3D depth maps and LiDAR/NeRF motion capture were used to create an enticing visual world of Precision Child Health. We leveraged customized VFX technologies and MiDaS depth estimation modelling through AI to visually explain the timeline of the story and dramatize it in action. We used layered visual techniques—without compromising on the humanity of the story itself—such as showing particles thumping to the rhythm of the patient’s heartbeat as he struggled to breathe. With two VFX companies working together diligently to develop the look and feel of the particles, the challenges we faced consisted of determining the correct balance between the raw footage and the visual effects.

Outcome

The campaign surpassed the clients goal by 26%, acquiring 9,567 monthly donors with a lifetime value of $7.7M, and raising $71.7M in total. Overall, it garnered 573.7M impressions, 12.97M video plays and 261K link clicks. SickKids was one step closer to meeting its goal and gained the momentum it needed to sustain its next decade of fundraising.
