Description

In the spirit of the event, we decided to make real change for the community hosting the Design Indaba – the Western Cape. Our research led us to the ‘Wet Socks’ social problem, in which children’s feet always get wet in the rainy winter months, leading to illness and subsequent absence from school.

So we decided to harness the creativity of the 3000 delegates attending the event to solve this social challenge.

How? We created an interactive ATM. An ATM with a difference. Instead of withdrawing money from it, delegates could deposit their Ideas for Change in the machine. Each day, these ideas were judged by a panel of international judges, and an overall winner was selected.

Nedbank committed to making this idea happen and is currently producing the winning idea en masse for needy communities.

Execution

The activation was launched at the 2015 Design Indaba, where we installed our Ideas for Change ATM. Over the three days of the event, we had a graffiti artist illustrate the panels surrounding the ATM, while the 3000 delegates deposited their Ideas for Change.

Each day, the ideas were judged by our panel and a winner was selected. After the event, the overall winner was chosen. Nedbank is currently producing the winning design en masse, which will be given out to needy communities in the Western Cape.

Outcome

The Ideas for Change ATM received positive feedback from those attending the event.

We had a high participation rate from the delegates, with over 200 Ideas for Change deposited each day.

Nedbank committed to making the winning Idea for Change happen, and is currently producing the winning design – The Sockington – en masse to be distributed free of charge amongst needy communities in the Western Cape.
