Description

The ‘Inner Beauty’ campaign celebrates the idea that beauty is about more than what’s on the surface. Whilst appearance is important, what’s on the inside is often forgotten. This trend is apparent not only in design and engineering, but also in wider society – where looks are all too-often valued over personality.

Execution

Our brief in the first instance was explore and define how you could travel into and through a series of objects revealing the beauty inside and out of the car and various random and surreal floating objects.

This initial r&d work and the detailed pre-visualisation formed the blueprint for determining what would be built in 3D and what would be made by the model makers and then shot as a series of stills. A variety of techniques were used to create finished ad: combining live action beauty car shots, stopframe animation and CG. We shot the Honda Tourer on an unused airfield in Spain over two days using Russian arm.

To accurately represent what was inside each object we had to sacrifice real objects and cut them up to look inside. They were then either built by our Art dept modelmakers. Luckily the two departments worked very well together to make it a successful meeting of disciplines. The 3D and model built interiors was put under close scrutiny given the macro nature of the journey through each object so we analysed the stop-frame footage and applied the findings in the comp to give everything the same finish. The addition of shallow depth of field immediately miniaturised the clean CG renders. Lens aberration, light leak, randomising the clean edges and subtle animation in the placing of the object on each frame all helped to mimic the stop-frame look.
