OVERVIEW

Background

As we head towards the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020, the number of tourists visiting Japan continues to rise and is expected to exceed 30 million per year for the first time in 2018. However, it appears that Japan’s appeal has not been fully conveyed to European travelers since over half of Japan’s visitors come from neighboring countries in East Asia. This would explain why European tourists visiting Asia overwhelmingly choose China and Thailand over Japan, which doesn’t even rank among Asia’s top five destinations.

A majority of inbound tourists visit Tokyo or Kyoto and other Japanese cities are not as well known. Foreign tourists are flooding these two cities, especially Kyoto, causing a shortage of hotel rooms and other problems. There is clearly a need to communicate Japan's attractions from a broader point of view.

Execution

To convey Japan's tradition, innovation and nature in a cohesive manner, we used editing techniques that effectively merge completely different images and motifs. The sense of unity is further strengthened by dynamic and mysterious music that gradually raises the tension. The 3-minute movie covers over 30 locations and cultures, includes the sounds of nature, and makes extensive use of time lapse, hyperlapse and drone shooting techniques.
