The edit required a unique storytelling device to allow concurrent stories to unfold. The initial focus is the subscriber, but as the edit develops it is revealed that The Times plays an equal role. The visual language developed to explore this idea was simple yet effective: the subscriber occupies the space of full-frame footage, while archival photographs are intricately arranged among Times headlines as homage to newspaper composition.
To have both characters—the subscriber and The Times—represented, brevity was imperative. Finding the perfect balance required the editor’s exhaustive exploration into the timing of live-action footage against the punctuation of the archival images, allowing the animated type to guide us through the story.
Music and sound design became the connective tissue, linking the headlines to the life of the subscriber. The most effective sound design elements held dual meaning, adding complexity and nuance to separate parts into a cohesive story.
