Description
The music video shows a chain of events that escalate to bloody mayhem in a circus, switching between multiple story-lines all taking place within the big top’s enclosure. The twist being that the whole film is told in reverse, so the initial action that sparks all this craziness is not revealed until the film’s final moment.
Execution
From production, directorial and editorial points of view this film is far more complex than it might initially seem. Aside from just the organisational challenge of filming something on this kind of scale with so many cast, stunts, vfx and dangerous animals, the film is also an astonishingly complex multi-narrative, all told in reverse. The challenge was to make all the stories, and the links between the stories, coherent whilst the whole film plays out in reverse. So each sequence was carefully designed with this in mind. The positions of certain shots that would normally act as foreshadowing devices in a film playing forward, for example, had to be completely rethought to work in reverse. And, as if that wasn’t enough, the director, wanted to create a film that, editorially, would work perfectly with the music when played either forward or in reverse. This of course required extensive story-boarding and editing of storyboards to act as a solid blueprint for the shoot itself.
