Description

Santa Lucia, the most important lottery in Guatemala, uses a big part of its revenues to support blind community in the country through the Meritorious Committee for the Blind and Deaf.

That is why it is normal to encounter blind people selling lottery tickets on the streets.

That is how we created Magic Lens.

A device integrated on the usual sunglasses, which recognize and translate in audio the value of money. This way, every time blind people receive a bill, they will be certain about its value.

Media was invited, as well as politicians and celebrities, because we knew the best campaign that could be done, was asking all of them to try Magic Lens and remind them that the value of seeing does not have a price. Due to being a new invention, everyone was talking about it and hopeful about trying them.

And in one month after produced and given Magic Lens to the blind sellers, the scams were eliminated completely. Even better, new job opportunities were available and they are now more confident because of the autonomy blind people gain with this device.

It is a PR action because a dialogue was created between the blind community and society, so they could “see” all the risks that blind people have to deal with it if they want to work.

Execution

It is 3D printed, making it cheap and light to have; and it is integrated to an already daily object used by blind people: sunglasses.

It consists on a small camera on the back of the right-eye glass of the sunglasses, connected to an earphone and a portable computer processing unit, run by a rechargeable battery. It has a clip, for having free hands and still rapid access.

Besides the power and volume it has a press button for photos, that when activated it captures the image taken by the camera and process if it contains a bill, and if so it will recognize and tell its value to the user through the earphone.

Media was call to witness the launch of the device, try it and report on why it needed to exist in the first place.

Different sectors like businesses, companies and NGO, joined Santa Lucia Lottery through the Meritorious Committee for the Blind and Deaf of Guatemala, allowing the production and purchase of Magic Lens for every blind seller of Santa Lucia Lottery in the country.

Moreover, the Police have not received more reports on scams nor robbery from blind people selling Santa Lucia Lottery tickets since a month after Magic Lens was implemented.

This work tool is being teach and implemented on social rehabilitation and employability section, for more blind people having other opportunities and autonomy in their lives.
