OVERVIEW

Execution

The execution was a touch / keyboard interface in which musical video samples are played, always in time. The user can record their own track and play it back instantly.

To achieve this simplicity meant complex development. 24 musical video samples were prepared in a way that meant they were instantly available to users. We employed the HTML5 audio API to manage complex audio interaction, including a synth effect.

Cross-platform development was particularly complex, as mobile operating systems do not permit multiple videos playing simultaneously; instead we devised an innovative solution using image sequences.

The result is simple, intuitive, engaging.

Outcome

Mix the City achieved 50k users in its first month, with little promotion, surpassing the client’s goals in a fraction of the expected time.

The client does not track consumer sentiment in a detailed way, but anecdotal and social responses were overwhelming positive, as were local and online press.
