Description

Winter sports athletes must conquer the challenges of nature, as well as each other, in the new trailer Winter Olympics campaign for the BBC.

The campaign is set to build audience’s awareness and excitement ahead of the BBC’s coverage of the 2014 Winter Olympics which start 7th February in Sochi, Russia.

Highly-acclaimed actor and star of Game of Thrones, Charles Dance, is the voice of ‘nature’ in the epic TV trail. Dance, in his role of ‘nature’ speaks a foreboding verse - as nature sets the challenge to the athletes to overcome its extreme elements in a bid for victory. The athletes are seen heroically striding towards the mountain as they prepare for their ultimate challenge.

Execution

The film was a mix of high resolution 3D scans of Alps, character 3D scans, colossal fluid and gas simulations, blue screen live action shoot, and talent of almost a hundred artists working on a very tight schedule. At it's base it is a typical, hybrid, blue-screen project with virtual sets, and environments, and some CGI character doubles. Most of the techniques used were quite well known. The difference was in scanning. We've never used such amount of high resolution scans of the real environment. The quality of the data was breathtaking, and gave us high level of freedom - but it also meant juggling a huge amounts of data in quite short period of time.
