Idea

This is an Amazon Alexa powered quiz to find out who knows more about the online world, kids or their parents, and learn a little bit about online safety along the way.

With guest presenters, TV Quiz Host Richard Osman and Children’s Presenter Lauren Layfield asking the questions. Over 5 quick-fire rounds we ask a selection of questions one team at a time to help start conversations across the family, young to old to raise awareness of the internet. All you need to play along is at least one parent, at least one child, and an Amazon Echo…then you can get quizzing!

Execution

Talking to your kids about online safety is difficult.

Research commissioned by O2 & NSPCC revealed there is a generational gap between parents and kids when it comes to internet use and safety, with 48% of parents admitting they do not understand how their children use the web. And kids don’t necessarily understand the dangers online.

We set out to create an entertaining and informative interactive experience. Engaging parents and children to bridge the digital divide together, bringing them both up to speed on internet safety and sharing their knowledge. And see who really knows more about the online world…the parents or the kids.

And we wanted them to play and learn together, at the same time, face to face. Not from behind their phones or laptop screens. So an experience that was intriguing and easy for both parents and kids was essential, and it needed to stimulate conversation between them too. A voice-enabled quiz skill on Amazon Alexa devices felt like the perfect format.

To make this as engaging as possible we designed a conversational user experience that replaced Alexa’s classic voice with live voice actors hosting the quiz (though we still retained Alexa as overarching quiz guardian and stat keeper). This created an emotional warmth you don’t usually get from skills just using Alexa’s persona.

And for a rich experience across all Alexa enabled devices which include screens, and mobile apps we created multimodal visual support to enrich the experience beyond just audio and speech. The application used a large database of questions to ensure that each team had a unique experience every time they played the quiz.

From concept to release this took just 5 weeks and brought together an adventurous collaboration of traditional and modern disciplines of script writers, experience designer, and technologists.
