Background

BandSports is one of the largest sports broadcasters in Brazil and they were ready to announce their live broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games. They prepared a huge event for the market in the Japan House, a museum in São Paulo, and needed to cause visual impact during the announcement.

Idea

These posters were created to launch BandSports as an official Tokyo Olympic Games broadcaster. And the idea comes from a simple truth: Japan is the land of monsters.

In fact, during the Tokyo Olympic Games of 2020, the population of such creatures will increase in the country. Because if you can spike a ball at 130km/h or lift over 200kg over your head you are a monster yourself. Every Olympic athlete is a monster.

Execution

We wanted to use all the richness of the Japanese culture. So the illustration follows manga comics style and all the little details are references to Japan or to the sport in subject. In the center of everything, our monsters. Born in Japan and competing in the games. Tokusatsu style giant robot volleyball spiker, oni samurai tennis player and our weightlifter version of Godzilla.

Outcome

The posters caused a huge impact. The Metro Newspaper used them in their cover art to announce the BandSports broadcast, the Archive magazine elected the work as it's cover and the Poster House museum in New York selected the work to figure in it's permanent collection.
