Overview

Background

The fact that Germany has a problem with right-wing extremism is evident at every federal election: right-wing campaign posters are becoming increasingly repulsive, but they are mostly legal. Simply kicking them over is not an option. That's a criminal offence in Germany!

"Laut gegen Nazis" is THE antifascist organisation in Germany – actively opposing right-wing extremism and strengthening civil resistance for almost two decades. They leverage the popularity of its partners within music, sport, drama, and society to raise awareness and pressure politicians. "Laut gegen Nazis" literally means "Loud against Nazis". And this organisation protects our democratic values and freedom as loudly and boldly as the Nazis shout their slogans by supporting initiatives and alliances against right-wing extremism in their public relations work.

The objectives were:

● Sensitising people to the issue

● Contributing to opinion formation and strengthening civil society resistance

● Advocating fundamental democratic values and freedom

Idea

We found a clever way for "Laut gegen Nazis" to oppose dehumanising election advertising without risking legal punishment. Facing the 2021 federal election, we mobilised a community that publicly opposed hatred and smear campaigns.

With the help of fearless supporters: pigeons.

Fed directly above the inflammatory messages, they commented on the right-wing filth – on behalf of all of us. The feeding platforms simultaneously acted as billboards that carried our political message.

Strategy

Our core target group consisted of the approximately 6,000 existing, loyal followers of "Laut gegen Nazis". The extended target group consisted of politically engaged, predominantly young voters of the left political spectrum. The aim was to create a snowball effect by generating sensational user-generated content. And we also wanted to achieve purely organic dissemination of our message.

Execution

We launched the stunt in Northern Germany during the federal election campaign in 2021 and it spread through social media to the rest of the country. The campaign consisted of three consecutive phases:

First, we activated our existing followers with posts on Facebook and Instagram that explained our extraordinary idea with a practical example. This phase lasted three weeks.

Next, we offered those who wanted to become active themselves a downloadable digital blueprint for an "opinion platform". Sprinkled with some birdseed, these attracted our actual, winged heroes.

And last, photos and videos of the platforms were uploaded at will and tagged with our unique hashtags. And for those who wanted to participate in the project strictly virtually, we provided Instagram filters that allowed everyone to shit and share digitally.

Outcome

The result was a countermovement that clearly shows how we want to deal with right-wing radicals in Germany. We achieved massive organic distribution on all channels. "Laut gegen Nazis" gained thousands of new supporters, fouled right-wingers' moods, and delighted countless pigeons.

● On Facebook: we reached 11,407 users organically and increased interactions during the campaign by more than 26%.

● On Instagram: we reached more than 115,000 accounts, expanding our reach by 260%. Interactions increased by 156%.

● Thousands of new supporters for “Laut gegen Nazis”.

● Foul moods among the right-wingers.

● And happy pigeons.

Great results considering we only had 6,000 followers on Instagram and a €0 media budget.
