Idea
A Japanese word “Omotenashi” became popular in the presentation at the 2020 Olympics bid. “Omotenashi” is a traditional Japanese approach to hospitality to provide a pleasant stay while respecting one's belief.
There is the presence of “Maiko,” an apprentice geisha in Kyoto, as one of the symbols representing Omotenashi.
We depicted, by contrast, of Maiko intensively playing Table Tennis against the opponent, displaying none of hospitality.
Although Japan will hold the Olympics in 2020, there is no place for Omotenashi in sports. We emphasized that by portraying the fighting spirit and the beauty of devoting all one’s energy to compete.
Strategy
We created the strategy for the film, which initially aired only online, to lure mass media in. We compared the images of Maiko who essentially behaves quietly and beautifully to the one who intensively rallies in Table Tennis. We added a plot twist revealing those anonymous faces in white makeup to be the most favorite players, who often picked up by the Japanese press. We applied this film structure to appeal to the mass media.
Execution
We managed to squeeze Maiko’s wig and kimono fitting into the schedules of those two top players in Japan. Those wigs took two months in production. We carefully made sure it did not shift even in intense play. We repeatedly tested with semi-professional players to see if they could play a precise rally wearing a 2 kg wig and kimono. We had only one chance to shoot so we took great care not to miss the dynamic play by shooting with 10 cameras.
