Description
To raise awareness about pollen being carried indoors we came across a simple idea. Inspired by the beauty of pollen grains as seen under a microscope, we magnified them, 3D printed them with nylon powder, and turned them into design objects.
The pollen lamps were displayed in indoor spaces representing our living spaces like furniture stores. The tags placed on the lamps informed the consumers and onlookers about the lamp's pollen sort, and advertise Sanofi's products at the same time.
Execution
We created a series of pollen lamps together with product designers. They were modelled after the main triggers of hay fever: sunflower, grass, birch, ambrosia, dandelion and ash pollen. The pollen lamps were 3D printed with nylon powder. Thanks to the latest 3D printing technology we could print their complex structures in one piece, reaching a very faithful rendering. They were displayed in furniture stores, concept stores, bars, fitness clubs, hotel lobbies, co-working spaces and at points of sale. The tags on the lamps informed the consumer about pollen, advertised Sanofi's products and directed people to our website.
Outcome
Sanofi’s promotional campaign strengthens its position as undisputed market leader in Switzerland and the lamps effectively changed the public’s perception of pollen in the long term.
The website generated many impressions. The pollen lamps were featured on several design websites, blogs and on social media.
People were so enthusiastic about the pollen lamps that we have started producing them for sale. The first batch of the lamps was immediately sold out, a new one is on the way.
