OVERVIEW

Description

The vehicle-mounted siren was invented 106 years ago. Since its creation, the siren has remained basically the same but emergency vehicles response time have become slower due to the increase of traffic congestions.

Execution

We came up with an idea to design a product that could interfere radio transmissions within a 1km range.

We interfered the signal on car radios broadcasting a warning sound. With this device we could alert the cars in advance so they could move before they hear the regular siren, letting the ambulances circulate with ease.

It´s a mix of components: Once you turn the siren power switch on, it activates a Universal Software Radio Peripheral that generates an interference that goes through a signal amplifier, and to an unidirectional antenna in order to focus the signal at upcoming traffic.

Outcome

With the use of Radio Ambulance, we reduced the traveling time of ambulances by 40% during rush hours.

The effectiveness of this device proved that most people are listening to the radio while driving.

But most importantly, The Ecuadorian Radio Association saved lives by allowing the ambulances to interrupt the radio programs.

Radio Ambulance, when interrupting the program saves lives.
