Execution
Five Eyes often abbreviated as FVEY, refers to an Anglophonic alliance compromising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States to jointly monitor global communications of their citizens. Utilizing the iconic signifiers of hard rock – the skull and lighting bolt combined with the albums themes of surveillance and control, a custom five-eyed skull was designed referencing the geometry of stealth bomber and drone designs. A glitch aesthetic was applied across typography and secondary graphic elements applied to album packaging, posters and merchandise.
Outcome
Shihad fans operate on tribal basis and the appearance of the album was greeted with much expectation, fans immediately grasped the album imagery and merchandise as being ‘authentic’ with sales exceeding expectations. The FVEY album debuted at number one in the New Zealand album chart, making it Shihad's fifth debut at number one on the New Zealand chart. This made New Zealand history with Shihad being the only New Zealand band to have five number one albums. FVEY also made the Rolling Stone Magazine's Australia 40 Best Albums of 2014 list.
