Background
The volcano in Tonga; the floods in Venice; the earthquakes in Japan.
You might be thinking, “that won’t happen to me” “I’ll be okay”. About half of Japanese people are not disaster-ready, despite the fact that 10% of all earthquakes happen in Japan. About 90% of the victims of the Tohoku earthquake were people who failed to escape in time when the tsunami hit. Experts say that there is a 70% chance for a massive earthquake to hit Japan within the next 30 years.
Idea
IDEA
In addition to saving lives in disaster-stricken areas, the Japanese Red Cross Society recently started initiatives to use information to save lives.
Strategy
Approroach 1
Information is crucial in saving lives during a disaster. We developed a system to deliver information in clear and simple ways on social media.
Approroach 2
It’s important that people are not clouded by bias when they receive life-saving information.
During the Tohoku disaster, most people failed to escape because they kept thinking “I’ll be okay”. Working closely with experts, we made an animated video about cognitive bias, using tinted glasses as a metaphor.
Execution
Follow the official account of the Japanese Red Cross Society on social media.
By doing so, you will receive information to protect yourself in an emergency.
Started in August 2021.
Information is sent from the official account of the Japanese Red Cross Society in the event of a disaster or when a seasonal accident is likely to occur.
Information is sent on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
The video explaining the psychological bias is also distributed on YouTube.
The scale is all over Japan.
Outcome
RESULT
2,500,000 views 1month
Within the first month, our video that solves cognitive biases reached 2.5 million views. The video reduced the feeling of “I’ll be fine” and made Japanese people realize that accurate information can save lives.
The world is facing more and more natural disasters. The Japanese Red Cross Society will continue saving lives one by one, with accurate information.
