OVERVIEW

Background

Overuse of plastic has reached a tipping point around the world. One of the largest contributors isn’t something we normally think of, it’s something much smaller - plastic straws. In Canada, there currently isn’t any law prohibiting plastic straw use (despite a cultural groundswell of support around the world) Straw use is an everyday use in Canada. Kids use them daily, adults grab them for everything from McDonald’s to a drink at Starbucks. They are used once and end up in our oceans, often killing and endangering sea life. Greenpeace wanted to take a stand and boldly pronounce that it was time to end the use of plastic straws. But we needed to create a groundswell, and in true Greenpeace fashion, we needed to rattle the cage. With limited resources and budget at our disposal, we need we needed a provocative approach that could live everywhere and grab international headlines.
