Description
There’s nothing like purchasing a lottery ticket to make people daydream, just like they dream about sitting on a warm, sunny beach when it’s freezing outside. That’s why this past winter, Puerto Rico launched a very unique lottery, in which instead of filling out a slip, people wrote their numbers in the snow: The Sunny Puerto Rico Jackpot. To play, people went to a mobile app, drew your numbers in the snow, and take a picture. Then they shared their numbers on social media.
Execution
Weekly drawings were transmitted live from Puerto Rico’s most beautiful beaches, showing viewers exactly what their prize looked like. We even wrote the winning numbers in the sand instead of a pile of snow. More than the way of revealing the winners, the drawings were a warm escape from the freezing cold, showcasing Puerto Rico’s greatest prize of all.
Outcome
Two lucky winners have been selected so far out of thousands of participants. Most importantly, as part of an overall strategic shift from big-budget TV campaigns to more cost-efficient direct marketing efforts, the effort has also contributed to making tourism one of the only economic sectors in Puerto Rico that is actually growing. The most recent numbers from the first quarter of 2016 show an all-time high 71% hotel occupancy rate and a 20% increase in total visits to the island vs. last year.
