Background

When the signs that Mother Nature sends us have become all too obvious, the time has come for brands to rise up to the challenge and take action. With the introduction of IONIQ, Hyundai’s full-electric lineup, Hyundai Motor remains steadfast in its vision of a clean mobility landscape where progress keeps people and communities at heart.

Small products are no exception. We thrive to build a consistent brand identity through a packaging system that can be expanded to cover a variety of product lines, from electronics to furniture and toys.

From the very smallest, we want to act for a sustainable future.

Idea

This new packaging system, in which the paper box structure interlocks and acts as a mutual shock absorber, perfectly protects fragile and delicate car diecasts or miniatures without the need for harmful plastic materials or even paper sleeves.

Because we also considered the environmental and cost impacts of transportation, we were able to minimize the shape of the box by inserting only essential internal structures.

The packages are made entirely of eco-friendly recycled paper, and its foldable structure allows for easy unfolding without chemical adhesives, encouraging recycling in a positive direction.

In order to deliver a sincere message of sustainability, we wanted to exclude unnecessary things and leave only the essentials.

We focused on designing a structure that could protect the product in any delivery environment without using plastic cushioning materials or styrofoam.

Execution

Sustainable Paper Package Series are designed to be folded and assembled using only paper without adhesives, so you can easily participate in recycling just by unfolding the package.

The most basic consideration was it's materials. Kendo paper was used for message cards, and Mag, an eco-friendly paper containing more than 50% recycled magazine pulp, was used for packages and paper bags. Furthermore, MIPAN®regen, a 100% recycled nylon yarn was used for the handle strap of the paper bag and package box.

Glued packages are difficult to unfold, which not only lowers the recycling rate, but also needs a lot of social cost to process them so that they can be recycled.

In addition to changing the material of the package, we also considered environmental issues when paper is recycled.

Outcome

In order to convey our sincere message of sustainability, we wanted to exclude unnecessary things and leave only the essentials.

We minimized all elements including the package structure, graphic system and components that will be printed and focused on structural design so that this package, made entirely of recycled paper, can protect the product in any delivery environment without the need for additional materials.

We were able to build a consistent brand identity through this packaging system, since can be expanded to cover a variety of product lines, from electronics to furniture and toys.

We gave no exceptions for visual irregularities such as stickers or strips, to lead to genuine sustainability.

Our vision of customer experience is to continuously and sincerely communicate with customers in an unadorned manner.
