Description
“The Magicians” makes users feel like they’re actually attending Brakebills — the same school as their favorite characters — and asks them to perform a series of lessons to prove their magical prowess.
Introduction to Spellcasting. Illicit Magic Acquisition. Welters Tournament. These are a few of the thirteen lessons at which each visitor has to excel to say they’ve graduated from the highly acclaimed Magic University and claim their magician status.
The lessons were launched each week to coincide with the release of the much-anticipated new episodes, keeping fans coming back to get their hands on more magic.
Besides becoming master magicians, fans could also unlock content about their favorite characters and read up on the rich history of Brakebills.
Execution
Featuring a rich video intro, thirteen cunningly unique lessons and cult content from hundreds of hours of footage, “The Magicians” became a destination for fans and gamers alike.
It’s not only a second-screen experience, it’s also a fully responsible site—each lesson beautifully adapts to whichever device a fan’s using. Because we built standalone, completely unique games for each of the thirteen lessons, each game required different technology including AngularJS, Coffescript, SASS, standalone Javascript objects, HTML5 video, Canvas, WebGL, CSS3 2D and 3D animations. The lessons were pushed live every week on the site and across all social channels.
Outcome
From January 18, 2016 to April 12, 2016, The Magicians: Welcome to Brakebills feature on Syfy.com earned over 973K page views and 140K unique visitors*, delighting fans and future magicians alike.
