Description
In 2012, after eight years of growth, the airline Vueling decided that it was time to start a new chapter in the company’s history and position itself as one of Europe’s leading airlines. It chose 22 October to communicate this to the press with a big event. In Barcelona’s Museum of Contemporary Art we created “the biggest flight simulator in history,” an unprecedented multimedia installation in which 220 attendees had the chance to experience a real flight without their feet leaving the ground.
Execution
We needed to be able to bring together the concepts of flying and dreaming using innovation which is the driving force behind the company’s growth. That led us to recreate the sensation of a real flight over the city of Barcelona. A multimedia installation was created: two side screens over 40 metres long; an 8 square-metre front one and 12 HD projectors. Detailed 3D computer animations were generated of the city of Barcelona and its airport, where the flight took off. Once in the air, data and graphics illustrating the different presentations were projected in real time onto the sky and clouds.
Outcome
• Appeared in over 400 media all over the world.
• Estimated media audience of 98,956,640 people.
• 90,000 people followed the event via streaming.
