Description
Metal flows in the darkness, hardening into gold. Ruby's reveal themselves in glossy but pockmarked elegance - nothing is perfect here, everything has history. Smokey light beams probe the pervasive darkness. Leaves of gold slide themselves into place. The Crown itself is forming. It comes from rough rocks and violent conquest. It bestows spiritual powers and stately command. It elevates and isolates, choosing but one in a family while alienating and subjugating all others. There is magic here, and we barely glimpse the object itself through a atmosphere thick with glittering noirish fog. This is THE CROWN.
Execution
The Crown is a sacred object - it bestows great power, but it also isolates the person that wears it. It is a true manifestation of the old truism: a blessings and a curse. Our job was to craft a sequence that could hint at this nuanced and mysterious legacy. We see The Crown as a seductive and luxurious piece of regal jewelry, but we also get close enough to witness its scratches and textures, the bloody reds of its refractive rubies, and peer through the cage-like ribbing of it’s construction. Dark, foreboding, exquisite - it is steeped in forces transcendent and destructive all at once.
Outcome
The show has received glowing reviews across the world (91% Rotten Tomatoes) and has been renewed for a second series even before airing. The Crown’s title sequence has been praised across the web, and also peaked into mainstream media (unusual for a title sequence) across UK and US (and online media). Newspapers (The Guardian) have used the sequence as a starting point for feature articles on “the golden age of television” and their titles, and inspired national news coverage on CBS’s Sundays about the title design industry.
