Description

We took the new Range Rover Sport PHEV to Tianmen Mountain Road in the Hunan Province, China; a road that incorporates a dizzying 99 hairpin bends along 11.3km of mountain roads. At the summit, you arrive at 999 steps, all of which lead to Heaven’s Gate, a natural rock arch in the mountainside. We then attempted what no other car has ever attempted before - to climb up 999 steps, at 45 degrees, to ‘Heaven’s Gate’.

Execution

The pre-production began with extensive testing at Land Rover's facilities in Solihull where replica steps were built to test how the vehicle (still in its final stages of powertrain development) would cope.

Simultaneously, the first of half a dozen meetings was held with Chinese government officials to negotiate permissions and access to the site and the process of applying for over 40 visas for UK crew commenced. The final crew assembled on site in October 2017 totalled more than 160 - and we still genuinely didn't know if we could do it.

Documenting every second of this breath-taking challenge, we created a long form YouTube film supported by 6 content rich, additional films where viewerscan learn more about our vehicle, the driver, the road, the challenge and the perspectives of the local community.

The films were distributed via global social platforms and also local market channels.

Outcome

To the end of April, just 3 short months after the film went live, we had reached an estimated 839m people across all owned channels, through media coverage and other PR.

The global YouTube channels garnered over 15m combined hits and over 33m impressions were made over all social channels.

Over 855k consumers engaged with the films and we received over 51k clicks through to the Range Rover Sport configurator website.
